Margot and the Nuclear So and So's

Here's some more indie fun. Great little 8-member band whose name comes from a character in The Royal Tenenbaums. It's sorta sad, folky, pop. The music feels cold and wintery somehow. Pefect for when it's cold and wintery outside. Or inside. Check 'em out here for info, and here for music—especially Vampires In Blue Dresses and Skeleton Key. Me likey.

Prague Blague (more nonsense)

"Everybody's workin' for the weekend..."
I am not kidding. He was playing that. It was awesome.

I ran into one of the guys from the Sonic Drive-In commercials at this church.

Mmmm...serene...

Drunk and hungry on my birthday. I got a McBorscht.

Yet another church.

Prague Blague (continued again)

Peaceful out here.

A random factory in the middle of the countryside. Still peaceful.

We stopped here for lunch but our driver wanted to wait in the car. From this quaint sidewalk patio we were able to watch our driver get approached by a cop, with sirens flashing; see him get questioned; see the cop inspect some papers; see them both angrily pointing at various signs posted on the street; and, finally, see our van disappear down the street. Our lunch, however, was very good. I had the pork tenderloin.

This was the outdoor cafe next to ours. If you look past the umbrellas on the right, you can see where our van used to be parked.

Even though this looks like the Universal Studios backlot, or one of the streets at Epcot Center, it is, in fact, Europe. Mmmm...cobblestoney...

Prague Blague (continued)

Church of Bones located in lovely Kutna Hora, Czech Republic.
Enjoy the fun pictures.

The delightful entryway to the church.

A lovely chandelier, and some decorative wall hangings.

Prague Blague

A trolly. We sometimes take it to the production offices we're working at. They're fun and free. And by Free, I mean I get on without paying anyone.

The little road that leads to famous The Charles Bridge. Mmmm...touristy...

This is a funny little band that was playing on the bridge. Apparently, The Girl from Impanema is a crowd pleaser in any language. They had a little tip bucket, so I dropped some czech coins in. It was either 93¢ or $17.25. I'm not sure. Their money is hard to read.

Another shot of The Charles Bridge, taken from a patio where we had dinner. I got sorta messed up on Absinthe that night, but I do know that The Charles Bridge is on the top of every Prague visitor's must-see list. It is also popular with Czech artists, musicians and souvenir vendors whose stands line both sides of the bridge year-round. A great time of day to come to the bridge is at sunset when one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the fully lit Prague Castle against the lavender evening sky. All of those statements are true because I copied it from a brochure I found in the hotel lobby because Absinthe makes your brain no work good tomorrow.

A building. I don't know what goes on in there, but I'm sure it's very important.

Alf.

A street fiddler. He played sad music. And if I had another $17 on me, I would have given it to him.

I Don't Care What You Call Me

It's all done in one take. Beautiful Song. Brutal video. Watch. You'll see.

I Sincerely Apologize For All The Trouble I've Caused

I don't like causing trouble. But occasionally, I guess it happens. And when it does, and you're sorry about it, check out David Ford and his album full of sad bastard music. It'll either make you feel grateful that your life's in better shape than his, or it'll make you feel grateful that someone else out there is as troubled as you are. Either way, good, simple songs, with fun titles like, "I Don't Care What You Call Me" and "Cheer up (You Miserable Fuck)".

Things I Thought I Said and Things I Actually Said While In Argentina

• Can I get change for this $20 peso bill?
Can I have 20 kisses for change?

• Do you have olives?
Do you have (held my fingers an inch apart, as if I were holding one olive)?

• I would like bottled water to go.
I want water in tickets to leave.

• Three beef empanadas.
Three beef empanadas. (pointing at menu and holding up three fingers)

I Wonder What They Sell Here (Part 1)

"I sure enjoy being warm, but I'm just so tired of jackets. If only there were something else that could keep my arms and torso warm besides this jacket..."

I Wonder What They Sell Here (Part 2)

Because "Mr. Sweater" was already taken, that's why.

Gnarls Barkley

This isn't new, but I can't get this song out of my head. And it is, hands down, one of the most gorgeous, mesmerizing videos I've ever seen in my entire life. And, well, I'm pretty old.

What Made Milwaukee Famous

These guys are re-releasing "Trying To Never Catch Up" in August, with a few new tracks. It's an old album, and they've been around for a while. But I guess I never got into them because their name made me think they were some kind of bad gimicky, bluegrass-country-rock group, like The Gourds, or something. But they're not at all. If Death Cab For Cutie and The Cars got drunk one night and did it, and months later had quadruplets, this is what the music would sound like. They've got a pretty nicely done website where you can listen to a couple of tracks, too. Check out "Hellodrama".

Turtle Camper

Weird. But I like it. This disturbing toy is called the TurtleCamper, by artist/designer Jeremy Fish. Check out his website. Amazing drawings and gorgeous paintings that will make you say, "Wow...what amazing drawings and gorgeous paintings." And then, after being weirded out by his twisted illustrations, you will probably also say, "Hmm...I'm quite sure there is something wrong with that guy."

Ganging Up On The Sun

Guster has a new album out. I think I like it. But I've only had it for a few hours, so we'll see. The music's a little more polished than their other albums, which is why I'm only In Like with it for now. It's less acoustic and a little more power-pop-ish. But it's still got some fun songs, with nice, simple harmonies. They've even thrown in a little piano on few tracks to mix things up, and it sounds good.

Check out "Manifest Destiny". Don't worry, it's not educational or anything. There's no danger of accidentally learning something about U.S. history. It's actually just a catchy song about love and crap. At least that's my take. Plus, it drops an F-Bomb, like, two lines in...and we all know cussing makes things cooler.

Robot Keyring

I like robots. I have keys.
My birthday is September 9th. That is all.

Mmm...a montage...

A few random pics from South America. (Click to enlarge)
Clockwise, from upper right:

1. These little kids were experiencing, what I like to call, World Cup Fever. Check out the attempted diving save.

2. "In Case of Emergency" signs on the boat we took over to Uraguay. The only one I could make sense of was "4". And if disaster were to strike at sea, I seriously doubt that information would do me much good.

3. A dog tied to a parking meter waits for his owner. I named him Squinty.

4. Our production company took a 2 hour break to watch Argentina put the beat down on Serbia, during their World Cup match. There was a lot of hugging. I was involved only occasionally. (not pictured)

5. Client dinners...zzzzz...

6. An angel sculpture atop a mausoleum. (I can't believe I spelled that right on the first try.)

7. A magnificent, two-story wall of liquor at a restaurant called Sucre. This is from the second floor. I had never felt more alive.

8. This little dude was chattering away in spanish, either selling something, or distracting me so his little buddy, hiding nearby, could pick my pocket. But the joke was on him: I wore no pants that day.

9. Argentinian bathroom sinks are very low.

10. Watching an old lady, watching me, take a picture of myself in Colonia, Uraguay.

Mmm...40˚F

I'll be here for a week or so if you need me. It's winter here. (Something about the southern hemisphere and the tilt and rotation of the earth or something. Ahh, Science...you're so crazy.) So for the next few weeks, I will wear close-toed shoes, flannel underpants and shirts with sleeves that are long.

Pictures to come.
Of Argentina.
Not my poor taste in clothing.

If Knight Rider Played Golf

This is the X1R Remote Caddie. It's a golf cart for your golf bag, for days when your golf bag is too lazy to walk. It does everything a normal golf pull cart does, except with less pulling on your part and more chasing, as it careens out of control, terrorizing small woodland creatures, and caddies its way into oncoming traffic. Seriously, watch this thing in action. It just rolls along on it's own and if it could talk, it would probably have a british accent, like K.I.T.T. A hilariously ridiculous waste of money and I can't wait to get one. Anybody have $2,000 I can borrow?

The Shoe Wagon

This is an Infiniti FX45. It's what they call a "luxury SUV". I used to want this car, because, well, I like luxury. And I like SUVs. It's just a beautifully designed car, and apparently, I can park it near giant military radar dishes if I wanted to.

Anyways, I just thought it was time for a new car, so I was looking forward to it. I even read the brochure--and I'm not a strong reader. But then I showed it to a friend of mine she said, "Oh, what a cute station wagon." I dismissed her silly comment and showed another friend. He said, "Well, I hope you enjoy driving your giant shoe."

Sometimes I hate having friends. Especially when they're right.

Austin Bands Are Good. Sometimes.

I like it here. Although the self-appointed title of Live Music Capital of the World gets annoying sometimes, (and honestly, it's not like my iPod is filled with music from Austin bands, either) there is a lot of live music here. Yes, a lot of it is kinda crappy. Or just trying too hard. Or just think they're great because they're in the Live Music Capital. Or maybe I'm just not adventurous (or cool) enough to discover the good ones. But every now and then, I'll accidentally stumble across something pretty good.

Voxtrot. They're from here. And they're not crappy. It's fun, catchy guitar rock, with a slightly Brit-pop sound. I've only heard a few songs, but check out "The Start of Something." It's a cool, snappy tune. Download it here, from their website, before they take it down. Click on the little, tiny music note icon by the name of the song. Turn up the volume. Hit play. Tap your toes. Think of Austin. But please don't move here. The traffic is terrible.

Things I Said At Work Today That I Probably Won't Say Again This Week.

1. Is the cheese getting in the way?

2. I was not in the Goonies.

3. I like the word 'supple'.

4. Let me squeeze this out real fast.

5. My hobo shoes are cracked.

6. You're not the boss of me. (to my actual boss)

7. It smells like man-love in there.

8. Did that thing with my index finger where i draw quick little circles in the air, indicating that someone should Wrap It Up. (while technically not something I "said", it was probably kinda rude, and I hope to not do that again.)

9. This is fun.

Good friends of mine are getting married soon. Well, not soon, but soonish. They're nice, friendly midwestern folks and this is their Save-The-Date card that they asked me to design. They said if I did it, they'd invite me to the wedding and I could have cake. And I do enjoy cake.

DWELL Pet House

If I had a dog, I would spoil the crap out of him by buying him a house of his very own, like this thing, designed by some guys named Otis & Claude. Fancy designers that make normal everyday things cooler--and thus, more expensive. But still, neat design and interesting materials. In fact, much nicer than the full-sized house that I'm living in. My only reservation about getting one is that it sorta looks like a tiny confessional booth. Which is ok, I guess, but I probably won't raise my dog Catholic. Check out more moderney stuff here.

Things You Should Not Substitute For Whipped Cream During Sex, Even If You Are Out Of Whipped Cream.

(An excerpt from McSweeney's that I didn't write, but agree with.)

• Mayonnaise
• Sour Cream
• Cottage Cheese
• Cream Cheese
• Almond-encrusted port-wine cheese ball
• Gravy
• Very Hot Tea
• Rock Cornish Game Hens
• Paper Clips

DooDoodles

Have you ever wondered what superheroes do when they're at home? When they're not fighting crime? Me neither. But apparently, this guy, James C. Strouse, has. He's got a set of hand-drawn postcards called Superheroes On The Toilet that depict all sorts of, well...superheroes on the toilet. Disgusting and hilarious. I'm gonna buy some and hang them in my bathroom, because I am immature and toilet humor will never get old.
